"
One father is more than a hundred schoolmasters."
- English Proverb -
The idea of creating
a day to honor fathers originated in Spokane, Washington. A woman
named Sonora Dodd thought of the idea for Father's Day while
listening to a Mother's Day sermon in 1909.

Sonora,
who was raised by her father after her mother died while giving
birth to her sixth child, wanted a special day to honor her father.
Sonora's father was born in June, so she chose this date to celebrate
the first Father's Day, but due to lack of time to prepare for
the celebration, it was postponed until June 19, the third Sunday
in June. |
Mrs.
Dodd is not the only one to be credited as the founder of Father's
Day, but it was her efforts, however, that eventually led to
a national observance. |

In 1924, President
Calvin Coolidge supported the idea of a national Father's Day,
but it only became an official holiday in 1966, when President
Lyndon Johnson signed a presidential proclamation declaring the
3rd Sunday of June as Father's Day. Here in Brazil, Father's
Day is celebrated on the 2nd Sunday of August. |
