Le rond
mont - The round mount
Part
of the canton of Fribourg since 1536, Romont was founded in the
10th century by the duches of Bourgogne. It is a town located
on top of a round hill, thus being named Romont (rond mont -
round mount in English).
In1240,
Pierre II de Savoie began to fortify the town. The castle, the
remparts, the towers and the Collégiale also date from
that time.
The church
La Collégiale Notre-Dame de l'Assomption (constructed
in the 13th century, destroyed by a fire in 1434 and reconstructed)
has an extraordinary collection of ancient stained glass from
the 14th and 15 centuries as well as from the 19th and 20th centuries. |
|
Located
7km southeast of Moudon and supposedly the smallest town
in Switzerland with a population 600 inhabitants, before reaching
Romont, a small medieval town perched atop an isolated round
hill, with lofty 360-degree views over the surroundings. |
From
the train station located below the hill, the towns wall
and two distinctive round towers stand out against the sky. |
|
Thirteenth-century
ramparts surround the town, which consists of little more than
two broad streets with a round tower at each end. The castle
dominates, with one tower converted into the Musée du
Vitrail (Museum of Stained Glass, holding mostly modern examples
along with an informative slide-show.
Next
to the castle is the towns beautiful Gothic Collégiale
church of Our Lady of the Assumption (Église La Collégiale
Notre-Dame de L'Assomption), also dating from the thirteenth
century, replete with original woodcarving from a rebuilding
in 1434 and some wonderfully detailed stonework. |
In
the picture above you can see the Collégiale church (in
the middle of the picture) and the right tower of the castle
of Romont (on the left), which is the entrance to the Museum
of Stained Glass. |

Here
is the Collégiale. I took this picture from the castle
