A
huge Christmas tree is built in the middle of the Rodrigo de
Freitas Lagoon every year since 1996. The tree, considered the
largest floating Christmas decoration in the world, measures
82 meters (approximately the same height of a twenty-seven-floor
building) and it weighs 458 tons and is composed of 2,8 million
micro lamps. It has become a tradition among the "cariocas",
as the citizens from Rio de Janeiro are called.
To celebrate
the tenth anniversary of the tree in 2005, there will be big
water jets next to the tree every half hour during the night.
The tree is lit every night from its inauguration to January
6th. |
Cariocas
and tourists gathered to see the inauguration of the tree on
a hot summer night.

The tree
was inaugurated on November 26, 2005 and will be lit every night
from 8pm to 2am (3am in the weekends) until January 6th 2006. |

Here

in 2004, seen from the top of the Corcovado in Rio de Janeiro.
I took this picture when I went to there with my son Nicholas
and my friends Lu (farfalles.com) and Iara (baersgarten.com) on December, 4 2004. |
